Net Metering

Net metering is a way for Great Lakes Energy members who generate some or all of their electricity by using renewable resources to reduce their bills by receiving credit for the excess power they generate. It is approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC).

When a net metering member’s renewable generator is producing more power than is being consumed, the excess energy is allowed to flow onto GLE’s electric system. The excess energy is measured by a special meter and credits are applied to the member’s bill for each kWh produced.

Net metering members are required to comply with electric distribution interconnection standards established by the MPSC. Net metering rates for larger renewable generators (greater than 20 kW) have been filed with the MPSC but are not yet approved.
