Recent Grant Recipients
The People Fund program is funded solely by the many Great Lakes Energy members who allow their electric bills to be rounded up to the next dollar each month. The small rounded-up amount that averages 50 cents a month adds up to help many worthwhile causes in your community.
Find out how easy it is to support community causes in your area by becoming a contributor to the People Fund. Enrollment is quick and simple. Locate your account number on a current bill and simply click here: Enroll in the People Fund Your enrollment will allow us to permanently round up your electric bill each month. You can also enroll by calling us at 1-888-485-2537.

2008 Grant Recipients
- Boyne Valley Lions Club: $3,000 to replace the roof on the food pantry, contingent upon their raising the remainder of funds necessary to complete the project.
- Otsego County Mounted Division, Gaylord: $750 toward the purchase of a defibrillator, contingent upon their raising the remainder of funds necessary.
- Boyne City Area Veteran’s Memorial: $5,000 to complete the new memorial in Veterans Park.
- Preservation Association of Beaver Island: $5,000 to provide a projection system at their new community center, contingent upon their raising the remaining funds necessary for the project.
- American Red Cross of Northern Michigan, Petoskey: $2,000 to purchase chairs, tables and mats for their conference room.
- Char-Em Human Services Coordinating Body (HSCB), Petoskey: $1,000 to conduct a program to reduce underage drinking.
- Scottville Community Table: $1,000 in addition to the previously approved $5,000 grant. (This had been informally approved via e-mail on July 6, 2008)
- Lake County Sheriff’s Office: $2,000 to purchase and implement an electronic tracking system.
- Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters (C.O.V.E.), Ludington: $2,298.86 to purchase 20 cameras for law enforcement agencies in Lake, Mason and Oceana counties.
- Custer Area Fire Dept. Auxiliary: $760 to purchase educational materials for grade school children.
- Child Abuse Prevention Council of Barry County: $1,500 for a computer system for pre-parenting classes and baby sitter training classes.
- The Refuge, Sheridan Township: $1,500 to develop their bike park in the Fremont area.
- Hart Skate Park: $3,000 to develop a skate park in Hart.
- Friends of the Timothy C. Hauenstein Reynolds Township Library, Howard City: $2,400 to provide books and literature for newborns from low income families.
- Nuveen Community Center for the Arts, Montague: $550 to purchase materials for the after school art program.
- Lakeshore Pregnancy Center of Allegan: $1,125 to provide car seats for children of needy families.
- Little Traverse Choral Society, Petoskey: $424 for a platform truck.
- Kalkaska County Commission on Aging: $5,000 to provide emergency utility assistance to seniors.
- Raven Hill Discovery Center, East Jordan: $2,000 to build a handicap accessible tree house.
- Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan, Petoskey: $10,000 to renovate the playground at the Children’s Learning Center.
- Otsego Conservation District: $5,000 to build a native plants greenhouse.
- Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, Petoskey: $3,000 for computer equipment.
- Good Samaritan Family Services, Ellsworth: $3,000 to build a Moms and Tots Center.
- Kalkaska Memorial Health Center: $3,500 for a keynote speaker at the 2008 Women’s Conference.
- Charlton Township Fire Department, Johannesburg: $1,944 for 4 air pack masks.
- Tustin Area Fire Department: $2,221.25 for an automated external defibrillator.
- American Youth Soccer Organization, LeRoy: $6,300 for improvements to the new soccer field.
- Scottville Community Table: Up to $5,000 to upgrade their kitchen to meet health department codes, contingent upon their raising the additional funds necessary to complete the project
- Lake County Trial Court Family Division, Baldwin: $5,840.94 for 3 sets of bleachers at Webber Twp. Youth Park.
- Western Michigan Old Engine Club, Custer: $5,000 to build a grain equipment display building.
- INC Spot, Reed City: $3,000 to help move to a new building in Reed City.
- Community Action Agency, Holland: up to $2,500 in a challenge grant to provide utility bill assistance to the needy in Ottawa County. They will receive $250 (up to the maximum of $2,500) for each new walker they enlist in their Walk for Warmth.
- City of Grant: $3,000 to help preserve their historic water tower.
- Seeds of Grace, Allegan: $1,500 to provide educational supplies, glucometer strips and prescriptions for indigent clients.
- Newman Christian Reformed Church, Hesperia: $2,000 to fund the Second Harvest mobile food pantry truck.
- Hart Area Fire Department: $1,350 to purchase video equipment for training programs.
- Mason/Oceana Department of Human Services, Hart: $5,000 to provide supplies and clothing for children placed in temporary foster care.
- Project Hope, NE Allegan County, Dorr: $2,000 for personal care and cleaning items at Annette’s Pantry.
- Housing Resource Center of Allegan County, Allegan: $2,500 to provide emergency assistance for needy residents.
- West Golden Wesleyan Food Pantry, Mears: $1,000 for food and supplies.
