Safety Demonstrations
Great Lakes Energy has a fun and interactive safety demonstration that drives home the message of electrical safety for kids.
Our safety program features a portable hot-line trailer, complete with poles, transformers, fuses, conductors, insulators, meters, and other equipment used to distribute electricity. The display demonstrates the power of electricity at 120 volts and 7,200 volts! Learn more about the program by viewing our video on YouTube.

We hook up the trailer to a local power source. Then, we demonstrate that just about everything can conduct electricity. During one part of the show, we lay different items across the bushings of an oil-circuit recloser. Students see that electricity is traveling through those items when the light bulbs at the end of the trailer come on. Kite strings, branches, household work gloves… We show you — not just tell you — that all of these things conduct electricity and therefore should not be used to “handle” electricity.
Then — it’s time for the weenie roast! We scorch a hot dog on the power lines — a powerful visual demonstration, with flames shooting in all directions.
