Michigan Electric Cooperative Youth Leadership Summit

The Michigan Electric Cooperative Youth Leadership Summit is held for three days each spring. Please check back in early 2013 for 2013 dates.

At the Youth Leadership Summit, you’ll get together with 30-40 students from around the state to learn more about cooperatives, electric utilities, careers and leadership. The program is held at the Kettunen Center, a few miles south of Cadillac, which offers nature trails, a lake, and sports areas for your free time. There’ll be safety demonstrations, some pole-climbing lessons, and you may even get to manufacture your own electricity! You’ll also learn about alternative energy and engage in leadership building activities.

Students who attend the Youth Leadership Summit program are automatically considered to represent Great Lakes Energy at the national Rural Youth Tour in Washington, D.C in June. Chaperones for the Summit will select the Rural Youth Tour participants based on the following criteria:

• Ability to follow rules, such as observing curfew and using appropriate language.
• Ability to get along with others.
• Ability to follow instructions/directions.
• Demonstrated interest in the program by attending all sessions and participating in discussions.
• Demonstrated leadership skills in either formal or recreational activities.
• Punctuality.

High school students in the 10th or 11th grades, whose parents/guardians are members of Great Lakes Energy, may apply to attend by submitting an application online or contacting our office at 1-888-485-2537, Ext. 8174.
