The State of Michigan’s Home Heating Credit program is one of many resources available to GLE members who may need assistance in paying their energy bills. People who qualify for this credit receive their assistance in the form of an annual payment voucher known as an “energy draft.”
What you need to know
When you file your State of Michigan income tax each year, you can complete a form to determine whether you qualify for a home heating credit and, if so, how much.
Qualification is based on several factors, including your household income and how much you pay for heating your home. Follow this link for more information on the home heating credit program.
After the state has received and processed your tax return and determined that you qualify, you will be mailed an energy draft. This draft will look and function similarly to a paper check, except that it must be made out to your utility—in this case, GLE.
To receive credit on your GLE electric account for the amount of the energy draft, you must mail it or drop it off at one of our local offices during regular business hours.
If mailing, please mail it to:
Great Lakes Energy
1323 Boyne Ave.
Boyne City, MI 49770
IMPORTANT: When mailing, please provide plenty of time for us to receive the energy draft prior to the expiration date. If your energy draft is postmarked prior to the expiration date, but we receive it after it expires, we cannot process it.
DO NOT mail the energy draft in with your bill payment. Our bill payment processing center cannot process energy drafts. If you send your energy draft with your electric bill payment, it will result in processing delays and will take longer for the credit to be applied to your account.
If your energy draft amount is more than your current electric bill, your account will simply maintain a credit balance, which will be applied against future bills until the credit is fully depleted.
Future bills will reflect how much remains on your credit balance. You can also check your balance using your GLE online account, the GLE mobile app, or calling our member support team at (888) 485-2537.
Some drafts are eligible for any overage to be returned to the account holder. Please inquire with one of our representatives if this applies to your individual energy draft.
Yes, energy drafts will have an expiration date printed on them, and we must receive them by the expiration date to be redeemed. Typically, energy drafts expire in mid-December.
If you don’t redeem your energy draft by the expiration date, contact the Michigan Department of Treasury at (517) 636-4486 to inquire about having the draft re-issued.
