Why Work for An Electric Cooperative?

October 15-19 is Careers in Energy Week.

We may be biased, but we believe electric cooperatives are great places to work. At a time when retirements are on the rise, we wanted to take a moment to share the advantages of working with our Great Lakes Energy team.

We’re here to serve our members–not only with safe, affordable, and reliable electric power, but also with community support and programs that help you save energy and money. We appreciate that what we do makes a difference in people’s lives.

In general, not-for-profit, consumer-owned co-ops offer competitive salaries and benefits. We also offer a stable work environment. Many employees start here and stay here throughout their career.

Spreading the word

Great Lakes Energy encourages young people to consider career opportunities within the electric cooperative network. The most recent example is GLE’s partnership in the Energy Fundamentals: Lineworker Emphasis program launched this fall at Boyne City High School. The pre-apprenticeship course, taught by two GLE lineworkers, provides basic-yet-essential concepts of working in the electrical field while developing skills and knowledge to become a lineworker.

More than just lineworkers

While our lineworkers remain our best-known public face, it takes many more departments to run an electric distribution co-op like Great Lakes Energy. We have communicators; accountants; key accounts representatives who work with our commercial and industrial members; billing clerks; information technology professionals; warehouse staff; and staking technicians and engineers who plot where new power lines will be built. The largest group of employees at a co-op is lineworkers, followed by administrative/member services, engineering, and other operations staff.

The average electric co-op has 48 employees. Great Lakes Energy, one of the largest electric co-ops in the nation, has approximately 240 employees working in nine different locations within our 26-county service territory. We look out for over 120,000 members.

Working at GLE is a pleasure, and we’re looking out for you by recruiting the best and brightest employees to serve you to the best of our abilities.
