Extended Power Outages Expected as Storm Damage Slows Repairs

Boyne City, MI — More than 42,000 Great Lakes Energy (GLE) members remain without power across 12 of the cooperative’s 26 counties. Persistent storms across GLE’s northern and southern territory have caused extensive damage, complicating restoration efforts. Since the storm activity began, power has been restored to nearly 67,000 members, but ongoing conditions are causing prolonged outages in some areas.

GLE and contract crews, tree removal teams, and partner cooperatives are working diligently to restore power as safely and efficiently as possible. Extensive damage to trees and electrical infrastructure, along with impassable roads, are significantly delaying progress. Crews have identified hundreds of broken poles, each requiring hours to replace, while also repairing downed lines and clearing debris. Due to the scale of damage and resulting access issues, some areas have yet to be fully assessed for damage. With additional storms in the forecast, GLE remains focused on restoring service despite ongoing challenges.

Safety Reminder: Generator safety is critical during extended outages. Always use a transfer switch to connect generators properly and prevent backfeeding, which poses a serious risk to utility workers. Stay at least 25 feet away from downed power lines, trees, or electrical equipment, as they may still be energized.

GLE advises members to prepare for a five-day to multi-week outage event. If power is not restored by 10 p.m. tonight and is essential, members should make alternative arrangements if it is safe to do so. For residents with limited options, Michigan 2-1-1 is a local resource available to connect those in need with lodging, food, or assistance. Visit www.mi211.org  to learn more.

Members can report outages through their online account, the Great Lakes Energy app, or by calling 888-485-2537. For updates, visit gtlakes.com/power-outages/ or follow GLE on Facebook.
