Great Lakes Energy Crews Making Steady Progress in Power Restoration

Boyne City, MI – Approximately 29,000 Great Lakes Energy (GLE) members remain without power following recent restoration efforts. Despite the difficult pace associated with setting new poles, crews worked into the evening to restore service to another 1,000 members.

GLE representatives continue working closely with local emergency response teams, embedding staff to more quickly respond to clearing needs. Crews remain challenged by widespread damage with hundreds of downed poles. Restoration remains a lengthy process, as replacing each pole takes several hours, alongside repairing wires and clearing fallen trees. Restoration is progressing, but it may be multiple days before some areas receive power due to the catastrophic damage to infrastructure.

Safety Reminder: Great Lakes Energy members are reminded to treat every downed line as if it were energized and stay a minimum of 25 feet from any downed wire, trees, or trees in lines.

Safety is the top priority when using generators during outages. Always run them outside in a clear, well-ventilated area and ensure proper connections to prevent backfeeding, which can endanger line crews. Small generators often require maintenance after extended use—check your manual for details. Learn more by watching our safety video at gtlakes.com/power-outages/.

Members can report outages through their online account, the Great Lakes Energy app, or by calling 888-485-2537. For updates, visit gtlakes.com/power-outages/ or follow GLE on Facebook.
