Rebates Available for Recycling Appliances

July 6, 2015

If you’re wondering what to do with an old refrigerator or freezer, Great Lakes Energy recommends you recycle it.
GLE’s Energy Optimization (EO) program provides free pick-up and recycling of secondary, still-working refrigerators and freezers. In addition, we mail you a $50 rebate check (limit of two).
If you happen to have an old dehumidifier or air conditioner you would also like recycled, we’ll take that at the same time and mail you an additional bonus rebate of $15 per unit.
Schedule pickup of your old appliances today by calling us at 877.296.4319.
BONUS ENERGY TIP:  Shopping for new appliances?  Take advantage of EO rebates on ENERGY STAR models.
Energy Optimization programs and incentives are applicable to Michigan service locations only. Other restrictions may apply. For a complete list of participating utilities, visit michigan-energy.org. Appliance recycling currently not available to Beaver Island.

Hi, Becky! We’re happy to report that this Energy Optimization (EO) program will be available this year. It generally begins in April, depending on winter road conditions. We suggest you call 1-877-296-4319 in April to schedule an appointment. They should advise when you call if the program has not quite yet begun. You can find more info on appliance recycling and other EO programs at https://www.michigan-energy.org/recycling/GreatLakes. Thanks for your inquiry.

Hi Chad! Yes a similar program is available this year. Although the former Energy Optimization program ended on Dec. 31, 2021, a new program, known as Energy Wise, has taken its place. Under the new program, $25 rebates are offered for recycling old refrigerators, freezers, room air conditioners and dehumidifiers. To participate in the program you must pre-register for the drop-off day which will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug 13 at our Boyne City, Scottville, and Newaygo offices. Follow this link to learn more about the recycling rebates and register for the drop-off day: gtlakes.com/energy-wise/ew-appliance-drop-off-day/. To… Read more »
