Great Lakes Energy offers scholarships for students pursuing a Utility Technician Certificate at Alpena Community College.
Scholarships will be awarded to students from western Michigan who are enrolled full time in the Utility Technician Program at Alpena Community College and working towards a career as a Journeyman/Utility Lineworker. The candidate’s permanent residence must be located in or around Great Lakes Energy’s service area. One-half of the scholarship will be applied to the student’s account for the fall semester. To be eligible for the remaining scholarship money in the spring semester, the student must earn a GPA of 2.5 or higher in the fall semester.
Upon earning a certificate for the successful completion of the Utility Technician program, we ask that the scholarship recipient allow Great Lakes Energy the first opportunity to consider him/her for employment. Great Lakes Energy is not obligated to employ the student, nor is the student required to give Great Lakes Energy the first right of refusal.
The number of scholarships and amounts will be determined annually, based on the number of qualified applicants. A single scholarship will not be less than $1,000.00 or greater than $3,000.00. The recipient(s) will be selected by Great Lakes Energy and scholarships may not be awarded in a given year if there are not students who meet the established criteria.
